The Howling

Trying to sinc up to Porteno time (laaaate nights, early evening naps) has some obstacles. Our apartment here in BA is in a highrise with a courtyard, and somewhere out there is a small, mournful dog who yowled pitifully all morning. It's not a case of animal abuse, but more whiny dog syndrome (I've seen the type. This dog's North American soul-sibling used to serenade its owner from the driver's seat of a parked Volvo every Saturday for hours, or however long it took to consume Polish sausages, sauerkraut, and presumably several beers.). Should it return, I will make an effort to record this dog's audio, because it is EPIC.

Sharing this audio may not be the easiest thing to accomplish as our tech equipment is a motley, idiosyncratic pile of microchips that all seem to hate one another. For video capture we've got an I-phone 4, a digital camera, an HD Flip cam, and a webcam. Love the Flip, but our laptop, let's call it Mr. Bobo, is too dull-witted to edit the HD footage. We tossed Mr. Bobo more RAM before we left to try to fix this (see previous posting re: lack of preparedness) which not only didn't fix the problem, but now Mr. Bobo refuses to operate off his battery and must be plugged in. It's sad, amigos.

But what's not sad is this awesome city. Spent the day getting oriented and seeing some sights. I was worried yesterday because the feel here is indeed very similar to Paris (my enemy city- more on that some other day), but the vibe is much warmer, as is the temperature. Despite the mellow winter weather, locals here are bundled up like crazy. It's damn amusing to see a dog in a sweater pee on a palm tree, but that's part of the charm.
